Elephant and Castle is an important junction in South London which gave its name to the surrounding neighborhood.

It is often said that the origin of the name comes from the marriage of King Edward I of England and Eleanor of Castile in 1254. As the Londoners would have had some difficulty in pronouncing the word "Infanta de Castille" to refer to their Queen, where the deformation that would have followed in "Elephant and Castle." However, it is thought the name , Elefant and Castle, might also have come from a pub bearing the same name in the 17th century.

Prices are very affordable in Elephant and Castle, especially considering it is located in zone 1. The area is pretty much build up, has many tower blocks and housing estates and does not really have a community feel to it (or a high street). Crime in the area is also above average and it has few green areas. If the latter does not bother you, than you would find affordable accommodation within walking distance of Westminster.
