Elephant and Castle isan important junctionin South London which gave itsname to thesurrounding neighborhood.
It is often saidthat the origin ofthe namecomes from themarriage of KingEdward Iof England andEleanorof Castilein 1254. As theLondonerswould have hadsome difficulty inpronouncing theword "Infantade Castille" to refer totheir Queen, wherethe deformationthat would havefollowed in"Elephant and Castle." However, it isthoughtthe name, Elefant and Castle, might also have come from apubbearing thesame name in the 17th century.
Prices are very affordable in Elephant and Castle, especially considering it is located in zone 1. The area is pretty much build up, has many tower blocks and housing estates and does not really have a community feel to it (or a high street). Crime in the area is also above average and it has few green areas. If the latter does not bother you, than you would find affordable accommodation within walking distance of Westminster.
