Richmond Upon Thames is a desirable area to settle in for families, though do expect a fairly expensive rent. It is a town located south west of London and is part of the county of Surrey. Although it is located in zone 4, it is an easy reach from London through the overland service to Warterloo (15 minutes) and is also the terminus of the westbound district line through Hammersmith.
The area features lovely Victorian and mews house. You will find particularly great accommodation close to the Richmond Green, the Hill or the Vineyard, on the lower slopes of Richmond Hill. The later has a village feel to it and you would never believe that you are minutes walk from a busy high street.
The area is known for its riverside and is a destination for many people trying to escape the busyness of London over the weekend. The high street reflects the purchasing power of the inhabitants and features some of the highest end brands (Ted Baker, Gant, Laura Ashley, Max Mara, Comptoirs des Cotonniers, Joseph, etc.). There are also many options when it comes to food, from Italian, good pubs, steaks (the Gaucho on the riverside), Indian, etc.
The area is also famous for its enormous park and the renowned Richmond Hill, facing the meadows and river Thames. This is actually the only view in England to be protected by law to preserve the land west and south of the hill. The later gets very busy during summer time and many people gather on the hill for a drink in the evening. The park is within minutes walk of the Richmond Park, covers 3.69 square miles and is accessible through Wimbledom, Ham, Kingston Upon Thames and Roehampton. It is a popular destination for families during the week end, though the park is so large that you will need a car, or at least bikes, to go through.
The downsides of leaving in Richmond are the commute to the city (the platforms and trains get very crowded mornings and evenings) and the proximity to the Heathrow airport.
